Hydrotherapy and Hydrotherapy Practitioners

What is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is an alternative therapy that uses water in the treatment of disease, help cure illness and maintain good health. Using water for therapy in this wa has been around for hundreds of years, as far back as the ancient Greeks and Romans, and it forms an integral part in many traditional medicine systems.
The therapy makes use of water, either internally or externally, in a variety of different forms, including steam, and ice, in order to relieve muscle pain, increase circulation, and generally improve health.
Hydrotherapy is practiced by licensed hydrotherapists, physical therapists, and naturopaths
.
The combination of heat and the buoyancy of water provide a relaxing medium in which pain relieving exercises can be carried out thus improving general fitness levels. The levels of exercise can be adjusted according to the age and fitness of the client and will supervised by a trained instructor or physiotherapist.

Hydrotherapy can be used to treat many conditions including:

  • Aching joints
  • Muscular pain
  • Arthritis
  • Rheumatism
  • Sciatica
  • Back Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Cramps
  • Colds
  • Headaches
  • Depression
  • Stress
  • Stomach problems
  • Sleep disorders, Insomnia
  • Acne and other complexion disorders

The benefits of hydrotherapy can include:

  • Reduces pressure on weight bearing joints while exercising
  • Helps muscles to relax, loosening tense, tight muscles
  • Improve and maintain the range of joint movement
  • Helps to relieve pain
  • Increases the metabolic rate and digestion activity
  • Increases the elimination of waste, thus assisting detoxification
  • Improves the function of the internal organs by stimulating their blood supply
  • Boosts the immune system, allowing it to function more efficiently
  • Hydrates the cells, improving skin and muscle tone
  • Supply pain relief

In certain situations therapists may advise that it is not advisable to have hydrotherapy. Discuss this with your physiotherapist if you have any of the following:

  • Any kind of wound or skin infection
  • A virus or stomach upset
  • High temperature
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Angina or heart problems
  • A chest infection.
  • Breathing problems
  • A kidney condition requiring dialysis
  • Some forms of diabetes, asthma or epilepsy

Hydrotherapy sessions are available on the NHS, and man hospitals have access to hydrotherapy pools. You can discuss this with your GP.

It is not advisable that cold baths are used for young children or the elderly an sauna baths should be avoided by people that suffer from heart conditions.
